Quality Assessment of Randomized Controlled Trials in Shiraz University of Medical Sciences Journal of Scientometric Res 2019 علمی و پژوهشی 4 3
ABSTRACT Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) is scientifc investigations that evaluate the safety and efcacy of new drugs or therapeutic procedures by using human subjects. This study aimed to assess the quality of RCT reports at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS) from 2014 to 2016. A systematic search was done in international databases with the keyword “SUMS” covering the three years yielding 9124 articles. Eventually, 120 articles were selected out of 540 RCT-based articles through proportional stratifed sampling. We used the 2010 Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) statement beside the Jadad scale to assess the quality of reports. We used the Pearson Correlation to investigate probable correlations between the CONSORT and Jadad mean scores and the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test to fnd the difference in the quality assessment tools in other studied variables. Among the selected articles, the average number of applicable reported items was 71.4 (59.5%) in the CONSORT 2010 checklist and 64 (53.4%) in Jadad. Among these RCTs, 55 (45.8%) had a high quality with Jadad scores ≥ 3 points. In addition, CONSORT and Jadad mean scores were signifcantly correlated (P <0.001, r: 0.808). We found no change in the mean score of CONSORT (P=0.788) or Jadad scale (P=0.492) over these three years. While the number of RCTs has gradually increased in these years, the quality of these reports has remained unchanged. Thus, national medical academics should make more efforts to conduct high-quality studies to ensure an appropriate study design.

Acculturation and psychological well-being among Middle Eastern migrants in Australia: The mediating role of social support and perceived discrimination Acculturation and psychological well-being among Middle Eastern migrants in Australia: The mediating role of social support and perceived discrimination 2019 علمی و پژوهشی 4 2
Objectives: The aim of this study is to examine the relative contribution of acculturation, perceived social support, and perceived discrimination on psychological well-being (PWB) among Middle Eastern (ME) migrants in Australia. Method(s): A cross-sectional study was conducted in Queensland, Australia. A total of 382 firstgeneration young adult (aged 20–39 years) ME migrants completed a self-administered questionnaire. The hypothesised model was tested through a two-step process: measurement, and structural model testing. First, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was applied to test the fit of the measurement model and reliability and validity indices were calculated. Structural Equations Modelling (SEM) was then used to test the structural model. The significance of the mediating effect was tested using bootstrapping method. Results: Mainstream acculturation had the greatest accumulated total effect on PWB through both a direct and an indirect effect via perceived discrimination. Ethnic acculturation had the second greatest total effect on PWB, with both a direct effect and indirect effects through perceived social support and perceived discrimination. Perceived discrimination demonstrated both a direct effect and an indirect effect on PWB through perceived social support. Perceived social support had only a direct effect on PWB. Conclusions: Facilitating ME migrants’ active participation in both ethnic and mainstream societies is important. Moreover, developing ethnic communities associations and resources could be an effective option to provide social support to ME migrants and in turn to improve their PWB. To provide ME migrants with better mental health outcomes, there is still a need to minimize the discrimination against them.

Using STROBE checklist to assess the reporting quality of observational studies affiliated with Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, and its correlates: a scientometric study from Iran Scientometrics 2019 علمی و پژوهشی science citaion index Negin Rahmani1,2 · Alireza Salehi3 · Hossein Molavi Vardanjani1 · Maryam Marzban4 · Arezoo Behbood5 4 از 5 نفر
Abstract The reporting quality of Observational Studies (OSs) is an important measure of their overall quality. We aim to assess the reporting quality of OSs of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS) in Iran in the years 2012–2015, using Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies checklist. Systematic online search was performed. A random sample of SUMS afliated published articles was selected. Articles were appraised and scored by two reviewers. Variables such as the study design, publication year, journals’ impact factor etc. were retrieved and their correlation with the articles’ scores was assessed. Out of 4297 published articles during 2012–2015, 1742 (40.5%) were OSs of which we assessed 171 (~ 10%) studies. Among these, 87 (50.9%), 74 (43.3%) and 10 (5.8%) articles had a cross-sectional, case–control and cohort design, respectively. Overall score of the reporting quality was 79% ±0.01. It was at 81% ±0.1, 77%±0.01 and 83% ±0.02 for cross-sectional, case–control and cohort studies, respectively. A signifcant correlation was observed between the study design and the score for the reporting quality (P=0.015). Reporting of “fow-diagram” (5%), “sources of bias” (28%) and “study size calculation” (30%) were the most missed items. Although the overall reporting quality of OSs was found to be at an acceptable rate, there are points of concern regarding some of the most important items that deserve the attention of authors as well as reviewers and editors.
